DreamBoundFree: A Ritual Performance Meditation on Freedom

DreamBoundFree Series

Sheena Johnson/Rebel Home Dance’s most recent performance series DreamBoundFree explores the question: Within the context of this political moment of Charlottesville and #blacklivesmatter, what futures are truly possible for black folks in these lands?

Vocalization rooted in the black spiritual and soul tradition has become an integral part of this performance series and ritual. It is about vocally claiming our future, though we haven’t seen it, we must have faith, and we must claim that freedom is on its way…

How do we communicate our humanity to those content with our blood shed?  What are the ties that bind? How do hold to heart MLK’s heed:

We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality; we are bound together in a single garment of destiny. Whatever affects one directly, affects all indirectly.”
